In the latest evidence yet that the 2022 Women’s Euros was a groundbreaking competition, Flutter Entertainment has revealed it processed more than 840,000 bets on the final.
Sky Bet, Paddy Power and Betfair attracted record figures for a women’s sporting event on Sunday, when Chloe Kelly scored in extra time to give hosts England a 2-1 victory over Germany.
It’s unsurprising that a massive 76% of bets placed on the final were for England to win, lifting their maiden European Championship against the seven-time champions. The overall total for stakes placed on the final amounted to £4.7 million, with Sky Bet taking £1.1 million in in-play wagers alone.
The swell in support for England resulted in £580,000 being paid out on Sarina Wiegman’s side, whose prospects now look better than ever heading into next year’s World Cup.
The Lionesses’ previous best finish at a European Championship was their runner-up result in 2009 (again, against the Germans), with the nation getting well behind their heroines.
