Free Bets: King George VI Horse Racing on Boxing Day 2021

December 26 is Boxing Day, and Boxing Day and horse racing go together like Christmas and figgy pudding. And just like that figgy pudding, you’ll be wanting to get a piece of the action on the best bets for Boxing Day racing.

December 26 is the feast day of St. Stephen, who is the patron saint of horses. So it’s only natural that there should be some world-class horse racing featured on Boxing Day in the UK. In fact, racing is contested across the country at tracks big and small.

If you haven’t yet purchased tickets for a Boxing Day race card, you might still be in with a chance, albeit a slim one. Regardless, there’s no need to be shut out of having a Boxing Day punt, even if you’re sitting at home on the settee.

King George VI Chase Betting

Contested at Kempton every December 26, the King George VI Chase is the highlight of the Boxing Day horse racing events. The 3.5-mile steeplechase first ran in 1937 and was named after the newly-crowned king.

Frodon will be back to defend last year’s title in the race. As well, two-time winner Clan Des Obeaux is also in the field. Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Minella Indo is making the journey from Ireland to contest the race.

The King George VI Chase is among three Grade One stakes events on the Kempton Boxing Day card.

The card at the Cambridgeshire track might not bring the same gravitas as the racing at Kempton but those with a keen eye can identify future prospects with the pedigree to go on to achieve great things.

In 2017, Cloth Cap won the 2.5-mile Hurdle Handicap. The horse has since won the Ladbrokes Trophy and was sent off as one of the favourites in the 2021 Grand National.

This is where punters in the West Midlands get their Boxing Day horse racing fix.

Featuring a floodlit, all-weather track, and several cosy hospitality options, it’s a lovely place to celebrate the festive bank holiday.

Fontwell Park

Known for its elaborate Christmas decorations, this West Sussex track is similar to Wolverhampton and Huntingdon in that the day is as much about the festivities as it is about the racing.

The relaxed feel of the day lends itself to the opportunity for an ideal family outing.

In Somerset, there’s a rich racing tradition and they ensure that it carries forward at Wincanton. The seven-race card includes three hurdles and three chase events.

The grand finale of the day is the Standard Open National Hunt Flat.
