What is the Eurovision Song Contest?

The Eurovision Song Contest has been held every year since 1956. It’s a showcase for individual European countries who submit one song each. The competing countries and millions of their viewers then vote on which song they think is best. The winning country has the chance to host the following year’s Eurovision Song Contest.

While the original Eurovision Song Contest took part among mostly Western European countries, the competing nations have grown since then. Eastern European countries are well-represented in Eurovision now, and the competition has been opened up to countries like Israel and even Australia.

Eurovision has launched many singing careers, notably Swedish group ABBA, who won with ‘Waterloo’ in 1974. However, the contest has also become a byword for cheesy ballads and outrageous stage performances.

Originally, voting for songs was done by a panel of judges from each competing nation. However, more recently, voting has been opened up for viewers who can vote by mobile.

Eurovision Betting Markets

Most UK bookmakers offer standard betting markets for the Eurovision Song Contest.

Win Outright: This is a bet on a country to collect the most points on the night and win the contest.

Each-Way: This is a bet on a country finishing in the top 4. You’ll receive each-way odds, typically a quarter of the win odds. One bet is placed on the win, while an equal bet is put on the country to come 2nd, 3rd, or 4th.

For example, imagine you bet £10 each-way on Sweden to win at 12/1. The total bet would be £20. If Sweden came 3rd, you’d win £10 x 3/1, or £30, for the place.

Each-way bets are a good option in Eurovision where there are lots of countries vying for points. You can find value in a 33/1 long shot who might have performed well during the semi-finals.

Top 10 Finish: Some bookmakers also offer a special price for a simple top 10 finish. It doesn’t matter where the country finishes as long as it’s 1st-10th.

Last Place: Some UK bookmakers will offer special odds for a UK last place. The United Kingdom hasn’t had a good recent record in the Eurovision Song Contest.

In fact, since winning the competition in 1997, the UK has finished in 20th place, or worse, 10 times. They have also recorded four last places, most recently in 2019.

“Political voting” has always plagued Eurovision, with countries consistently voting for their close neighbours and political friends.

This type of bloc voting has disappeared somewhat with the introduction of viewer votes. However, there are still certain trends savvy gamblers can follow when hunting out a winner.

Bet on Eastern Europe: Traditionally, the UK and Ireland have performed well. Ireland won consecutive contests from 1992 to 1994, then again in 1996. However, they have failed to pick up a title since.

The number of competing countries has grown since the break-up of the Soviet Union. Eastern European and Baltic countries have performed well since 2000.

Estonia, Latvia, Ukraine, Serbia, Azerbaijan and Russia have all won Eurovision during the last 20 years. Friendly voting, together with big production values from competing nations mean you can ever dismiss Eastern European countries.

Never Dismiss Sweden: Other than Ireland, Sweden has won the most Eurovision Song Contests. They’ve also won the contest twice in the past 10 years and are always a good each-way bet.

Look for Big European Pop Stars: Most Eurovision singers are virtually unknown in the UK. However, many already have followings in Europe. Do some research and see who’s been hitting the charts across the continent in the run-up to Eurovision.

Female Singers Win More Than Men: A good tip is to back solo singers. They tend to take down Eurovision more often than bands. In fact, solo stars have won the last 10 Eurovision Song Contests, and the majority are female.
