Microgaming Slots Review 2026: Classic Games, New Releases & Games Global Relation

Microgaming is one of those names that almost everyone who has played online casino games for a while will recognise. But reviewing it in 2026 is surprisingly complicated.

The Microgaming that gave us Mega Moolah, Immortal Romance, Thunderstruck II and Break da Bank Again is not quite the same thing as the Microgaming releasing new games today.

In 2022, Games Global acquired Microgaming’s distribution business, historic game IP and progressive jackpot network. That means many of the games most players still think of as “Microgaming slots” — including Mega Moolah and much of the famous back catalogue — now sit with Games Global.

Microgaming hasn’t disappeared though. In fact, it has become considerably more interesting again. The current Microgaming website lists more than 500 games, spanning slots, live casino and other RNG games, and the company is releasing new titles throughout 2026. It has also launched Red Papaya, a new studio behind games including Kong’s Jungle Tower.

So this review needs two parts: the Microgaming classics that helped build online slots, and what Microgaming is actually doing now.

Microgaming dates back to 1994 and is widely credited with developing one of the earliest true online casino software platforms. Its influence goes well beyond simply having been around for a long time.

People involved in the original games have credited Microgaming with Fantastic 7s, described as the first online slot, while the original Thunderstruck introduced free spins to online slots and Thunderstruck II later added persistent player progression between bonus rounds.

Those ideas sound completely normal today. They weren’t at the time.

What Happened to Microgaming and Games Global?

This deserves explaining properly because a lot of casino sites still get it wrong.

Microgaming did not simply change its name to Games Global.

Games Global launched operationally in May 2022 after acquiring Microgaming’s distribution business, online game IP, progressive jackpot network and interests in several studios.

That included much of what players traditionally associated with Microgaming.

Games Global now presents Mega Moolah, Immortal Romance Mega Moolah, Thunderstruck Wild Lightning Mega Moolah and other jackpot titles as part of its own portfolio. Stormcraft Studios, whose team has deep roots in the original Microgaming development operation, continues franchises including Immortal Romance.

Meanwhile, Microgaming continued in technology and platform services and has subsequently built up a modern games business again.

By 2026, its own site describes Microgaming as a provider of 500+ games operating across more than 1,000 websites, with new slots, live casino products, specialised RNG games and third-party studio content.

Confusing? A little. For players, the easiest way to think about it is:

Old Microgaming classics: many now belong to Games Global.

Modern Microgaming: an active game provider releasing a new generation of games under the Microgaming name.

The Microgaming Games We Still Rate

The fact that ownership has changed doesn’t make the old games irrelevant. Some genuinely introduced ideas that became standard across online slots.

Break da Bank Again – Our Favourite Old Microgaming Slot

We have always had a soft spot for Break da Bank Again.

It isn’t remotely sophisticated by 2026 standards. You have nine paylines, a bank-vault theme, wild multipliers and free spins rather than an encyclopaedia of modifiers, collectors and mystery features.

That’s actually part of the appeal.

It came from a period when slot developers weren’t trying to fit five different proprietary mechanics onto every screen. You understood what was happening almost immediately, while the 5x wild multiplier and increased multipliers during free spins gave the game enough personality to distinguish it from the original Break da Bank.

Games Global has continued using the IP. More recent variations have included Break Da Bank Again 4Tune Reels and Break Da Bank Again Mega Moolah, with the latter combining the original game with four progressive jackpot tiers.

It is a good example of how the old Microgaming catalogue continues to live on even though Microgaming itself no longer owns that historic portfolio.

Immortal Romance

Immortal Romance is probably the best example of Microgaming treating a slot more like entertainment than simply choosing a theme and putting some symbols on reels.

The original game revolved around four characters — Amber, Troy, Michael and Sarah — whose stories unlocked through different free-spin modes. That persistent progression helped it stand out from the endless vampire-themed slots that appeared around the same period.

It was successful enough that Stormcraft Studios finally launched Immortal Romance II in 2024, twelve years after the original, followed by Immortal Romance: Vein of Gold in 2025.

We wouldn’t call the original visually impressive anymore. It looks its age.

But the fact developers are still expanding the same characters more than a decade later tells you considerably more about its staying power than simply calling it a “player favourite”.

Thunderstruck II

Thunderstruck II is another old game that deserves its reputation.

It wasn’t merely successful because Vikings and Thor look good on a slot machine. The game stored progress through its Great Hall of Spins, gradually giving players access to different bonus modes rather than resetting everything after every session.

According to Stormcraft executive producer Terence Igesund, who worked on the original Microgaming titles, it was the first multi-bonus slot to save the state of a game and preserve a player’s progression.

That is an actual reason to call a game influential.

Mega Moolah

No discussion of old Microgaming works without Mega Moolah, although it is important to be clear that the jackpot network now belongs to Games Global. Mega Moolah became famous because its progressive jackpot was pooled across participating casinos and could reach enormous amounts.

In October 2015, British player Jon Heywood won €17,879,645 (£13,209,300 at the time) from a single Mega Moolah round at Betway. Guinness World Records recorded it as the largest online slot-machine jackpot payout at that point.

That is a far better piece of evidence for Mega Moolah’s significance than describing Microgaming as the “king of jackpots”. There is a downside players should understand as well. Progressive jackpots require part of the theoretical return to fund the jackpot mechanism, and classic Mega Moolah has historically carried a substantially lower RTP than many conventional slots. A massive headline jackpot therefore doesn’t automatically make it attractive from a mathematical perspective.

Microgaming currently has an active 2026 release calendar. Its official games list includes:

Microgaming also already lists further games scheduled for September 2026.

That makes the comeback more substantial than simply licensing the old name onto a handful of games.

Kong’s Jungle Tower

The current game we would watch most closely is Kong’s Jungle Tower.

It launched in November 2025 as the first game from Red Papaya, Microgaming’s new flagship studio. The game uses an unusual 3-4-5-4-3 layout with 720 ways, high volatility and a Jungle Tower that stores cash values and multipliers as you play.

What interests us more is the studio behind it. Red Papaya is explicitly being positioned as a modern development arm of Microgaming, combining established mechanics such as cash collect, Hold & Win and variable reel systems rather than trying to recreate the Microgaming of 2008. Trying to make Thunderstruck III forever would turn Microgaming into a nostalgia brand.

Break Away Is Becoming a Franchise

There is also an interesting continuity between old and new Microgaming in the Break Away series.

The original hockey slots have been around for years, and Break Away Deluxe remains listed by Microgaming as one of its “legendary games”. It has a 96.88% headline RTP, high volatility, Rolling Reels and a 3,200x maximum payout.

Instead of abandoning it, Microgaming has continued expanding the series with Break Away Gold, Break Away Candy Link&Merge and, most recently, Break Away Deluxe – Triple Pots in July 2026.

This is where we think Microgaming has a useful advantage.

It has old IP that some players actually recognise, but it can modernise those games without pretending nothing has changed since the desktop casino era.

Microgaming Now Goes Beyond Slots

Another reason the old article needs replacing is that “Microgaming only really makes slots now” isn’t accurate. The current portfolio covers slots, specialised RNG games and live casino.

Microgaming Live currently lists blackjack, roulette, baccarat and branded tables, including its Playboy casino range. The company says its live portfolio contains more than 15 titles.

It is also experimenting with products closer to modern instant-win and crash games. The specialised RNG catalogue includes FlyX Cash Turbo, football-themed SoccerX and StrikerX, as well as arcade and fishing formats aimed at different international markets.

Not everything here is especially relevant to a British casino player, but it shows that Microgaming is once again trying to be a broad game supplier rather than simply maintaining its old slot catalogue.

Don’t Assume Every Microgaming RTP Is the Same

As with Nolimit City, there is another detail we think casino reviews should make clearer.

A game can have multiple approved RTP configurations. Take Kong’s Jungle Tower. Microgaming publishes a headline RTP of 96.30%, but its own game information also lists alternatives of 94.20%, 92.20% and 86.75%. That is quite some range. So if another review tells you “Kong’s Jungle Tower has an RTP of 96.30%”, that is incomplete information.

The casino may be using another version.

Always open the game’s information or paytable at the casino where you are actually playing and check the RTP there.

Is Microgaming Licensed in the UK?

There is another reason to distinguish old Microgaming from Games Global.

Games Global Operations Limited currently holds active UK Gambling Commission licences for both remote gambling software and casino game hosting.

Apricot Investments Limited, the corporate entity associated with Microgaming’s post-2022 platform operation, also holds active remote casino and gambling software licences. However, the UKGC register currently lists “microgaming” as an inactive trading name under that entity.

For UK players, the important thing is ultimately the casino offering the game. You should play only through a UKGC-licensed operator and check the game’s own information rather than assuming that an old Microgaming logo tells you who currently owns or supplies it.

How Does Microgaming Compare to Other Slot Developers?

Microgaming’s strongest advantage in 2026 is not that its graphics are better than NetEnt’s, that it has bigger jackpots or that it releases more games than Pragmatic Play. Those claims are either subjective or outdated.

Its real advantage is history combined with a surprisingly active attempt at reinvention.

The old Microgaming helped establish things we now take for granted: online slot games, progressive jackpots, free-spin features, persistent bonus progression and major entertainment licences.

Then it effectively handed much of that legacy to Games Global.

What makes the story interesting again is that Microgaming has not simply disappeared behind a B2B platform business. It now has hundreds of games, an active release schedule, live casino products and a new slot studio.

We don’t think the new Microgaming has yet produced another Immortal Romance, Thunderstruck II or Mega Moolah — a game that genuinely changes how the wider industry thinks about slots. That is a high bar, though.

Our view: Microgaming deserves its place in online casino history, but nostalgia alone isn’t a good reason to recommend a software provider in 2026. What interests us more is if its new generation of games can build an identity of their own. Red Papaya and the revived Break Away series give us a reason to start watching it closely again. Then on the other hand, competition is huge, and they seem to be quite behind when you have other more innovative studios and smaller game developers.
