The National Lottery remains one of the UK’s biggest gambling products, with £7.9 billion in ticket sales in 2024/25. What Changed With the National Lottery in 2026?
Lotto received its biggest structural change in years in June 2026. From the first new-format draw on 10 June, every £2 Lotto line automatically enters two separate rounds using the same six chosen numbers.
Each Wednesday and Saturday draw now uses two sets of six main numbers and a Bonus Ball. You can win in Round 1, Round 2 or both. The jackpot is shared across the two rounds, while the other prize tiers are paid separately for each round.
The jackpot still starts at £2 million and can roll over five times before a Must Be Won draw on the sixth. Allwyn says the new two-round format improved the overall odds of winning any Lotto prize from 1 in 9.3 to 1 in 4.9.

If you play through the National Lottery website or app, you are entering the official draw.

Betting on a lottery

Who Runs the UK National Lottery?

One practical advantage of playing online is that your entries are attached to your account rather than a paper ticket. You can check your entries and results online without having to keep hold of a physical ticket.

Lotto
Lotto is the original National Lottery draw game. A line costs £2, and you choose six numbers from 1 to 59 or let Lucky Dip select them for you.
Draws take place every Wednesday and Saturday.
The big change came in June 2026. The same £2 line now enters two rounds in every draw, with a separate set of winning numbers drawn for each round.

Set For Life takes a different approach from a conventional jackpot.

Thunderball
Thunderball is the cheapest of the main National Lottery draw games at £1 per line.
Draws take place four times a week on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. You choose five numbers from 1 to 39 plus one Thunderball from 1 to 14.

National Lottery Instant Win Games
The National Lottery also has a large range of Interactive Instant Win Games online. These are different from Lotto, EuroMillions and the other draw games because you don’t wait for a scheduled draw. The result is determined when the game is purchased.
Individual games come and go regularly, so listing particular titles quickly becomes outdated. Prices, top prizes and odds also vary between games.
There was, however, a significant rule change in April 2026. The Gambling Commission increased the maximum permitted price of an online Instant Win Game from £5 to £10, while increasing the maximum permitted top prize from £1 million to £4 million. (Gambling Commission)
That doesn’t mean every game now costs £10 or offers a £4 million prize. It simply gives Allwyn scope to introduce games up to those new limits.
As with all National Lottery games, the outcome is based on chance. Spending more or playing for longer doesn’t improve the underlying odds of an individual play.
Online Lottery Bonuses and Promotions
The official National Lottery doesn’t normally work like an online bookmaker or casino when it comes to welcome bonuses.
You shouldn’t expect the usual deposit £10, get £30 type of sign-up promotion when opening a National Lottery account.
Lottery betting sites and bookmakers can be different.
