Who will win the World Cup 2026? The bookies’ favourites
The outright market has a clear shape going into the tournament. Spain are the favourites at around 9/2, reflecting their Euro 2024 win and arguably the deepest squad in the world, with England next at roughly 11/2 and France close behind near 6/1. Brazil and Argentina, the defending champions, sit around 8/1, while Germany and Portugal head the bigger-priced contenders. Tellingly, no nation is given much better than a one-in-six chance, which makes this one of the most open World Cups on record — and prices move constantly, so check the live market before backing anything.
The format, dates and key facts
For the first time the tournament features 48 nations rather than 32. The 12 groups each contain four teams; the top two from every group plus the eight best third-placed sides reach a brand-new Round of 32, followed by the last 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final. From the Round of 32 onwards every tie must produce a winner, with extra time and penalties if needed.
Top World Cup markets to bet on
Outright winner
Pick the nation to lift the trophy. With 48 teams the each-way terms matter — compare how many places a bookmaker pays before betting, as that can outweigh a small edge in the headline price.
Golden Boot
The race for the tournament’s top scorer is wide open over 104 games, with Kylian Mbappé the early favourite around 6/1 and Harry Kane, Lamine Yamal and Vinícius Júnior all prominent.
Group winners
Because the top sides often progress comfortably, outright group shocks are rarer — group-winner and to-qualify markets are a good way to back a strong feeling about a group without committing to an outright pick.
British Gambler best bets and advice
Our tips are based on the bookmakers’ own probabilities once the margin is stripped out, so they highlight genuine value rather than a hunch. Spain look the soundest favourite but the price is skinny for a 48-team event with eight knockout rounds to survive; we would rather take a contender each-way at a bigger price, where many bookmakers pay two places. Compare at least two firms on every selection — half a point on a 6/1 shot is real money — and set a tournament budget on day one rather than chasing across a 39-day event. As ever, our analysis is a guide, never a guarantee.
World Cup free bets and betting offers
The World Cup is the busiest betting month of the year, and the major UK bookmakers all run welcome offers around it — usually a matched free bet or bonus once you place a first qualifying bet. A free bet works hardest on a bigger-priced selection rather than a short favourite, as most return only your winnings and not the stake. You can compare every current welcome offer, free bet and bonus on our World Cup free bets page — always check the terms, including minimum odds and wagering, before you claim.
